The opportunity to compose the music for an episode of the renowned German Krimiseries "Tatort" was a golden ticket that came our way, thanks to our prior collaboration with the exceptionally talented director, Jano Ben Chaabane. At the time, we were in the final stages of our work on the score for "Oderbruch," and this fortuitous offer allowed us to seamlessly transition from one project to the next.
Our approach to this project was a well-oiled system, honed through experience. We had developed a process of pre-producing music, providing mixes and stems to the editor, which proved invaluable in streamlining the entire editing and post-production workflow. During our meeting with the director, a clear vision emerged. He urged us to draw inspiration for the film's atmosphere and aesthetics from the iconic series "Fargo." This directive set the creative tone and guided our musical exploration.
In this instance, we also had a treasure trove of pre-existing layouts, originally crafted for past projects but never used. These compositions were gradually enriching our personal music library, ready to be employed in future endeavors. One such layout took center stage, serving as a prominent thematic motif for the first half of the film. Our provision of stems allowed us to infuse subtle variations into the theme every time it recurred, adding depth and nuance to its presence.
Throughout the film, three distinctive themes emerged, each lending its unique support to different facets of the story's narrative tapestry.
The turnover process was remarkably smooth, given that the music already in place during the edit originated from our own compositions. After receiving the picture lock, we focused on refining and adding meticulous detail to key moments in the film.
Two rounds of feedback sessions with the supervisors and copy editors at ARD elevated the music to new heights. As we eagerly await the premiere on TV in 2024, we are confident that the culmination of our collaborative efforts will resonate with audiences and bring a fresh dimension to this iconic series, "Tatort."
This episode of Tatort Dresden will air sometime in Autumn 2024.
