When Schiwago Film approached us to compose the music for an episode of the Krimiseries "Ostfriesenwut," it was a pivotal moment. At that time, we were already deeply engrossed in the creative whirlwind of two other ongoing projects, and the clock was ticking. However, our collective conviction as a team made us realize that we could rise to the challenge and bring our musical vision to life.
Our first meeting with Director Christine Repond marked the beginning of a unique creative journey. Christine made it abundantly clear that she desired an unconventional approach to the music for the episode. Her emphasis lay on restraint – she wanted minimal music beneath the picture, and, above all, music that wouldn't over-explain or intrude upon the narrative.
In response to this unique directive, we decided to adopt a different creative process for this project. Rather than composing the music in advance, we chose to wait until the picture had been fully cut. The idea was to create a cohesive musical project for the entire film, employing a limited selection of instruments to craft our sonic palette. This approach would allow us to maintain a minimalist, unobtrusive score that delicately supported the narrative without overshadowing it.
However, this endeavor turned out to be more challenging than anticipated. Working with an evolving cut of the entire film, where the picture was not yet locked, posed its own set of hurdles. Timing adjustments were a constant, requiring us to adapt and rearrange our compositions each time. It demanded meticulous attention to detail and focus to ensure that crucial moments remained perfectly synchronized with the ever-shifting timecodes.
Despite the complexities, this process was a valuable learning experience, shedding light on the intricacies of film scoring. While I would gladly embrace a similar approach in the future, I would strongly advocate for starting the musical journey only when the final edit of the film is in hand, eliminating unnecessary time constraints.
In the end, our collective efforts yielded a result that left everyone involved satisfied and it was great to witness a successful airing of the movie with more than 6 Million viewers on prime time!
