Faking Bullshit (2020) is the most recent feature film I had the pleasure to work on. During the premiere of the previous movie I had my first approach to the project with the producers and director whom I’ve known since the Schneeflöckchen times. I was really excited by the idea of working with them again.
Everyone grows and evolves into new rolls and Alexander Schubert (who played the Screenwriter/Dentist on Schneeflöckchen) was decided to begin his path as a director and writer. For this he adapted the script Kopps (2003) by Josef Fares to make it more in tune with the German idiosyncrasy and reality…and it worked great!
Starting the creative process, I decided to look for a Main Theme. A Theme that would embody the essence of the story and/or the main characters.I experimented with a sound pallet for a while until I found something that worked for me, which turned out being the simplest instrumentation I could find. It consisted mainly of a 3- piece band with drums, bass and guitar plus some Hammond-Organs, Rhodes keyboards and occasional brasses. After several demos the Main Theme was there. A solid, simple and fun melody, which I could iterate and adapt for different situations during the film. But that Theme wasn’t enough to cover all the emotions, characters and situations happening throughout the film. Thus I came up with a “Sad Theme”, a “Tension Theme” and a “Mystery Theme” to help the main characters through their different emotions. There were also some scenes that lent themselves to more experimental musical transitions like a western duel or a fight scene, which was occurring entirely in the mind of one of the protagonists, so I made them fight/dance to the rhythm of flamenco. This was also the first feature film where I composed 100% of the music so it was a huge amount of hours invested in creating, recording, producing, mixing, mastering and learning.
Due to the unexpected pandemic and subsequent quarantine the production came to a halt. It was a time of confusion for the world and no less for the movie industry with festivals being postponed, premieres being cancelled, people not being able to leave their houses and so on. The rescheduling of the Premiere meant that we would have more time to finish the movie but soon Germany had the pandemic under control and the restrictions started to loosen. The festival where the movie premiere was going to be hosted gave us a new date earlier than we expected. That meant that I had one month to finish the music. And by “finish” I mean writing, recording, mixing and mastering. The time pressure produced an unexpected effect on me. I became relaxed and enjoyed the process. I committed to my ideas faster. Ideas that may not have been great in the beginning, evolved and became great during the creative process. I’m very pleased with the end product but most of all I’m happy and grateful to the universe for one more opportunity to develop my creativity, learn more about this craft and myself and for feeling even more motivated and driven to keep on learning, experimenting and growing as a composer.
